Abbazia MonteOliveto Maggiore

Tuscany | Crete SenesiItalian Soil is now initiating Midwest U.S. importer outreach for these Divine wines.

Why this project. Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore is a rare combination of heritage, place, and working agriculture. The wines are produced with seriousness and continuity, and deserve a U.S. route-to-market built on discipline, pricing integrity, and the right distribution partner.

The story. Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore is a Benedictine community founded in the early 1300s, rooted in centuries of monastic work and stewardship of the land. The estate’s identity is inseparable from this continuity: a place where time, craft, and purpose still shape what is produced today.

Where they are. The abbey and estate sit in Tuscany, within the dramatic landscape of the Crete Senesi, near Asciano (Siena). This territory’s clay hills, light, and natural extremes create a distinctive agricultural environment—one that translates into authentic character in the wines.

The agricultural estate. Monte Oliveto is also a productive farm managing a mosaic of cultivated land including vineyards, olive groves, woods, and other traditional rural activities. The approach is rooted in continuity and respect for the environment, with a practical focus on quality, consistency, and responsible land management.

The wines

The estate produces a focused portfolio of nine wines, spanning Grance Senesi DOC and Toscana IGT, based on classic and complementary varieties including Sangiovese, international reds, and selected whites. The style is food-driven and balanced, positioned for the U.S. market when matched with the right importer and clear execution.

“Cœnobium” DOC Grance Senesi

Red wine, made from the typical grape varieties of the Grance Senesi, with a clear predominance of Sangiovese.

Ruby red color. Aroma of red berries with a herbal note. On the palate, it features good acidity, rich extracts, and a solid alcohol content, making it also suitable for long aging.

“In Albis” IGT

White wine made from Vermentino grapes, with the skins separated from the liquid during pressing.

Pale straw yellow color. On the nose, a strong mineral note is followed by fresh white-fleshed fruit.

A fresh entry on the palate with a pleasantly mineral finish.

“Rosatum” IGT

Made from Sangiovese grapes, aged in stainless steel.

Pale pink color, bright. Fresh, mineral aroma, very fruity with notes of red fruit.

Fresh and smooth on the palate, with well-balanced acidity.

In 2023, selected for the Silver Medal at the WinePleasures competition.

“1319” IGT

Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Merlot grapes.

Aging: 12 months in 27 hl Slavonian oak barrels and French tonneaux, followed by 6 months in the bottle.

The “1319 IGT Wine” has an intense ruby red color, a complex bouquet with notes of ripe red berries, and hints of vanilla, tobacco, and spices. Its powerful and well-balanced structure and tannins make it austere and suited for long aging.

Food Pairings : A very elegant wine, ideal for red meat dishes, game, aged cheeses, and as a meditation wine.
